Positivity PR

Although PR professionals are often stereotyped as being a cynical bunch, we get tired of bad news just like everyone else. Seriously, we take no joy in other people’s misfortune. Well, maybe we have the odd snigger when it’s about Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary…

Anyway, we thought we’d share with you one of our favourite antidotes to what can sometime feel like the relentless tide of bad news – National Days.

Originally designed to raise awareness of an issue or organisation, National Days have been hijacked by Joe Public and PR agencies worldwide (you can have a Day of your choice ‘officially’ recognised just by filling out an application form), leading to a proliferation of worthwhile, thought provoking, uplifting, ridiculous and brilliant Days. And, thanks to social media, they’re now able to gain more traction than ever before. Here are some of our favourites:

National Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19th)

Fast becoming the Gold Standard of National Days, Talk Like a Pirate Day achieves absolutely nothing, but listening to your colleagues addressing each other as a ‘landlubber’ or ‘swarthy sea-dog’ is infectious fun.

National Old Rock Day (January 5th)

Not classic rock like on the radio, just a chance to get together and celebrate old rocks. Popular with geologists.

National Punk for a Day Day (October 25th)

Because nothing shakes up the establishment more than an organised day spent giving yourself a mohawk whilst listening to The Ramones.

National Positive Thinking Day (September 13th)

And why not? Most of us could do with a positive pick-me-up at least once a year.

National Kazoo Day (February 28th)

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Potentially very irritating.

And if that’s not enough, don’t think for a second that there’s a limit on how many National Days can fall on a single day; did you know today is not only Business Women’s Day but also Hug a Vegetarian Day AND Elephant Appreciation Day? You do now. And you’re welcome!
